This is a working hypothesis based on propagation of seismic disturbances through the planet. Analysing the difference in arrival times of the shear wave and the longitudinal waves yields information regarding the density and nature of the material through which the disturbances travel. The 'science' isn't wrong, the error lies in treating scientific theories as if they were absolute truth. They are the current best guesses based on all the available evidence. Politicians time and again use the phrase 'follow the science' when it is manifestly obvious they haven't a clue what science is. One thing science is not is irrefutable dogma.
