She was not a sister ship of the Titanic. Titanic was a white Star Line vessel with sisters Britannic and Olympic. Lusitania was operated by Cunard, and was identical to the Mauritania. The wreck needs to be examined, but the explosives theory was immediately circulated by the Germans. However, to cause an explosion, the munitions and detonators would need to be stored together, which is never done. A possible explanation arises from the fact that the coal bunkers were nearly empty after a trans-Atlantic crossing and were consequently full of coal dust, which mixed with air, is highly explosive. The shock from the torpedo explosion would serve first to mix the coal dust and air in the bunkers and ignite it. Had she been torpedoed on the outward run, with full bunkers she would have been able to limp to the nearest port. Neither the captain nor the U boat commander expected a single torpedo to cause such catastrophic damage. Whatever the cause, whether tragic accident or deliberate false flag, it did not justify the loss of thousands of American servicemen in the meat-grinder of the Western front.
