Trees aren't just fodder for our fires, or furniture for our homes. They are also sacred, places of worship and contemplation. A sycamore fig tree that has stood for nearly two hundred years in the legendary city of Aksum, in Ethiopia, and it is now a part of the community's religious life. And in Punjab, in India, a huge banyan tree is slowly taking over the surrounding area, devouring a farmer's land piecemeal. But the farmer is not worried: the tree is sacred, and he would't dream of chopping it back.
