The Earth supposedly rotates counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and so does the atmosphere as a result of the Coriolis Effect but the balloon actually traveled in both directions, as it flew from China and crossed the US from West to East which is impossible on the globe model when you are powered solely by the jet streams.

The surface speed of the earth is about 40 times faster than a somewhat stationary airborne object, so the United States simply passes under the balloon. It's not hard. ALSO: I just proved that the earth is an oblate soheroid.

Jetstreams isn't a one way wind/stream from east to west, as it can move from west to east depending of the hight/level it goes. That's the reason you sometimes, on commercial flights, experience a faster flight than expected either from west to east and vice versa. It's much more complex than suggested here...
